Globalization may have made the world a smaller place, but for most of us it's still not small enough. We are constantly innovating newer means of bringing people closer together. The phenomenal success of social networking sites has proved the basic need of people to connect to each other, and maintain these connections over periods of time. However, websites like Facebook, Orkut, MySpace etc. only bring people together to meet emotional needs i.e. the need for social interaction. There is still a large gap where meeting material needs is concerned. There are only a limited number of websites in India that bring people together to serve their need for merchandise or services.
What is worse is that students are a sadly neglected breed, and even websites like ebay, Cleartrip etc. that do exist to meet material needs are often restricted to the privileged lot that own a credit card, and let's face it, there aren't too many people handing those out to students (and maybe with good reason :P). But that does leave us poor folks in a pickle. We need cheap access to housing, books, laptops, mobile phones, jobs etc. just as much as the next working person, in fact, even more. Yet while there are infinite sources that provide you with information about the best 5 star hotels, there are practically no websites that tell you about good hostels or paying guest accommodation in any city or campus.

So we decided that we'd had enough, and that we'd have to do something about it. We didn't need other people to help us meet our basic needs at university. We'd do it ourselves. And thus SearchMyCampus was born. searchmycampus is an online campus noticeboard where students as well as student service providers can advertise their needs - merchandise/services they want to buy or sell. The idea behind this is that all students need certain basic merchandise and services during their time at university, and they can help each other get access to these. What one student has and doesn't need another student may want. If they can be put in touch with each other, they can fulfill each others' requirements i.e. the need of one to get rid of something and the need of to obtain it.

I may have purchased a television when I was a student at university, but when I graduate I need to sell this television. Another student who has just started university may need a television, but may not want to purchase an expensive new one. If I can get in touch with him to sell my television at a reasonable price, we both benefit. Students also tend to have common needs. I need to get to college everyday but commuting everyday is expensive. If I can find 5 other students from areas near my house, we can share the costs among ourselves and so mutually benefit. I may have found an excellent apartment near university that I cannot afford to live in by myself. If I can get in touch with students from my college who also require cheap accommodation in a convenient location, I can share the rent with them, and save my money for more important things like food.

Sure this sounds pretty simple when we say it, and I'm sure you're all smacking yourselves on the head for not thinking of it earlier, but there is a problem here. There are at present no efficient and effective means of communicating your need to people who can fulfill them. If I'm one among a few thousand students in my college, and my college is one among 100 in my university, then my chances of locating someone who meets my requirements are low. At least if I stick conventional methods such as campus noticeboard advertisements, college newspaper classifieds etc. And ultimately if I do manage to find someone, the expenses involved would probably force me to live on air and water for the next 6 months.

Remember, Remember ? What You Need To Remember During Your Exams

Examinations are a regular part of school and university life. They aim to find out exactly how much you know about different subjects, and how well you can manipulate this information to answer a given question. Most of the knowledge you need will have been taught to you several times before you take the exam, but most students still get stressed and don?t perform as well as they could do during exam time.

The first thing to remember is that you need a revision plan. A few months before your exam, find your course list and make your own list of everything you need to know. Then, draw up a timetable that will allow you to study every module. Give shorter amounts of time to the parts you know, and longer amounts to anything you struggle with or don?t understand. Print practise exam questions and make sure you have neat notes. Draw mind maps or rewrite your notes, do whatever it takes for you to revise the information so it is fresh in your mind. Aim to finish learning all the modules two weeks before the exam. Take the rest of the time to do more practice papers, mark them and repeat revision on any areas you get wrong.

For each subject, make sure you know your exam paper before you go in. How many questions will the paper have on it? How many of these are you required to answer? How much time do you have in total, and how much does that give you to answer each question? Use this information to plan how long you have to read the paper, decide what you want to answer and check your answer afterwards. Make sure you know whether to expect short answers, multiple choice, structured questions or essays. Also, consider if some questions are compulsory and where you can get most of your marks from.

The day before, reduce stress by knowing where the exam is, what time it starts, what you need to take it, what you aren?t allowed to take in with you, and what you are expected to wear. Some universities will make you take anything with pockets off, whilst others require see-through pencil cases.

When you get into the exam, read the question two or three times and highlight the key words. Brainstorm the question and see how much you know, and relate the information you come up with, back to the question. Arrange these points logically, and start to write your answer. Make sure you reach a conclusion and summarise what you have written, and then review your work. Make sure you are writing clearly and coherently, and start with the question you feel most confident about answering. Look at how many marks each question is worth and aim to make that amount of points. Remember to check your spelling and use punctuation.

It?s important to remember that you aren?t expected to write everything you know about a topic. You will attract many more marks if you are selective about the information you use and you actually answer the question asked. Make sure that whatever you write has an introduction and a conclusion and makes sense. Remember that you don?t get any marks for questions you don?t even attempt.

After the exam, avoid talking about it outside. It?s easy to convince yourself you did badly if you listen to the evidence of others. Remember that there is more than one way to answer a question! Use your performance to tweak your exam technique. If you ran out of time, make sure you leave more time during the next exam. If you didn?t know enough, look at how much and how effectively you revised. Did you answer the question? Then forget about the exam and concentrate on the next one, knowing you did your best!

Election 2012 – Education Policies and Why College Students Should Care

Four years ago, a noticeable energy spread throughout college campuses in the United States. Students everywhere radiated excitement about the upcoming historical 2008 presidential election between Barack Obama and John McCain, and the eligible voter turnout rate exceeded 61%, the highest turnout rate since 1964.

This excitement has since diminished among many Americans as the economy has changed drastically since 2008. The recession, among other things, has led to high unemployment rates and an overwhelming increase in student loan debt. Voter apathy is back in full force for Election 2012, with only 18% of voters under 30 following the campaigns very closely, compared to 35% from four years ago. This decline in energy among college students is particularly concerning, as this election is critical in deciding the future of U.S. education. It is vital that voters understand the significantly different education policies of President Obama and Mitt Romney, especially in regards to higher education for those starting or currently enrolled in college.

Book Reviews Versus Book Reports: A Brief Primer

The terms ?book review? and ?book report? are often used interchangeably to mean something in-between the two of them. Improper identification of a book review versus a book report in a syllabus can lead to costly grade mistakes.

A book report is just that: a report on the contents of a particular book. Book reports can be written about both fiction and non-fiction books, but they all have certain things in common. In some ways, a book report could be considered a summary, although it's a bit more extensive than that. Book reports contain not just recounting of plot, characters, and so forth, but also discussions of the primary ideas, themes, and concepts introduced in the text.

A book review, on the other hand, goes into more detail about the reviewer's opinions about the book. Again, the review can be of a fiction or non-fiction book, but regardless, the reviewer includes more of a critique of the text, more of an analysis of the ideas and concepts introduced by the author. Of course, as always, opinions should be supported. It is not good book review practice to, say, state that the book is stupid, or the author doesn't know what he is talking about, without showing why this is the case. It is, however, perfectly acceptable to write that the author doesn't have a leg to stand on if you talk about why this is the case.

In a way, a book review is a more comprehensive book report. The report stops short of discussing the writer's thoughts and perspectives on the book, whereas the review is incomplete without those things. You could think about a book review as a cross between a literary critique and a book report. No matter how you define it, a book review is an in-depth analysis of a text while a report is little more than a summary.

This will help you avoid plagiarism and develop your analytical, vocabulary and structuring skills. Online books often have outlines, summaries and reviews which help you find the very chapter, paragraph or sentence to be used. Once you have found interesting and useful abstracts download them on your computer in one file ? you will have a one document which will contain quotes, abstracts and comments to support your essay. While reading what you have gathered highlight the most important statements and leave your own comments in brackets (outlines will help you find out which statement should be used in each paragraph of your own essay). Then read the support materials document again to interpret collected material in your own statements and phrases.
